Week 10 (2 weeks left)

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

I will be on a plane flying over the Pacific in 2 weeks, I hope all is well.

This week has been very good for our investigators and for speakers. I also have a nice funny story about perhaps being killed in the bathroom because my companion isn't paying attention. Also sugar withdrawals and tea.

Most of these have to do with SiTu Lao Shi and her investigator Amy. This las Wednesday we were teaching her about the word of wisdom and wanted her to give up tea... and apparently nai cha (milk tea) is the best drink of the planet. She eventually said she would give it up for a day if we would give up tiantian dongxi (desserts: cake, ice cream, cookies...). I agreed and so did my companion, half not knowing what he was in for. Luckily I haven't been eating tons and tons of sugar recently. For the first day he was ok, but then we extended it to a week. He has been having headaches and sugar withdrawals. He is set on going back come Wednesday when they serve us ice cream. The fun thing is now we both know a bit of what it takes to sacrifice things. Since our investigator isn't really real she doesn't have to give anything up. Hopefully though it pays off.

On Thursday when I went to the bathroom my companion was lagging behind so she started scolding-ish him in Chinese and so I'm laughing as I walk into the bathroom. I come out and she is still going on about how he has to wait right outside and says that if he isn't right there and someone tries to kill me in the bathroom then he can't help me. This is still all in Chinese and I'm laughing so hard and we go back to the classroom and retell the story. Come Sunday, Steven B. Allen specially mentions standing right outside the bathroom for companionships.

He had a good talk about first of all our agency, then never being along, and finishing talking about weapons of rebellion. He had a non-exhaustive list starting with pride, anger, lust, cheating, lying, dishonesty, manipulation, laziness, prayer, scripture study, not giving all... His very last comment was to memorize Nephi's last 4 words. "I must obey. Amen" Wo BiXu FuCong. Amen. We all said this with him then left and had our fireside review. Last Tuesday Elder Nelson came and he spoke on being exactly obedient and becoming our purpose.

We have a new investigator, Peng YuanPeng. He has a good knowledge of Christ, but he believes that is where our desires are and not necessarily what we do that will save us. We have some interesting things to cover, but it is nice to work from a Christian background. He is definitely growing, he knows that the MoErMenJing is the word of God.

Mu JinYi is a learning experience as well, we have lots to learn still, but hopefully we can help her to feel what I have felt acting like an investigator.

My investigaor me is really becoming someone... sometimes I wish I were my investigator simply for the faith that he has, Elder Peay said that I should just become him. That isn't a terrible idea. I just needed to realize I had the faith that I have.

Overall another good week of learning and growing in my trust, hope, and faith. I'm beginning to feel that these 12 weeks almost aren't enough, luckily the Lord provides for his servants. I still have 2 weeks to study and prepare!

I know this Church is the only true church. I know that we have a living prophet, Thomas S. Monson. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. I know Joseph Smith saw our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. I know that our Saviour lives, through his Atonement we can become more than we may even think possible.

with love,
Shen Zhang Lao

P.S. Happy birthday Grandpa Dilley!
